Avalakki Oggarane (Poha)

This was a very common breakfast or snack in South India while growing up. And is now a comfort food for me. Quick and easy to make. Additional vegetables could be added too.

What you’ll need:

  • Red Onion Finely Chopped – 1
  • Carrot Grated – 1 large
  • Green Chilies Slit Lengthwise – 2 or to taste
  • Avalakki (Poha) Washed (I used thin variety. Soak it for 5 minutes if you are using thick variety) – 2 to 3 cups
  • Coconut Grated – 1/4 to 1/2 cup
  • Peanuts Roasted – 1/4 cup
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
  • Cilantro Leaves Chopped – a few sprigs
  • Turmeric – 2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Olive oil – 2 tbsp
  • Urad Dal – 2 tsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp

Method:

1. In a large pan, warm up the olive oil. Add Urad Dal, Mustard Seeds and let it splutter.

2. Add Onion, Green Chilies, Curry Leaves and saute till the onion is translucent.

3. Add grated Carrot, Turmeric, Salt and give it a turn. Saute for 2 minutes.

4. Add washed Avalakki, Coconut and mix. Cover and turn heat to low for 5 – 7 minutes.

5. Add Cilantro and Roasted Peanut. Serve and eat hot. Enjoy!
