Dinosaurs Science Project
As soon as we saw “Dinosaurs” in the topics list at my 5 year old’s preschool for the upcoming science fair, we picked the topic. It was apt for him, he loves watching ‘Dinosaur Train’, reading about dinosaurs and has even shown me an ankylosaurus and asked me to make pancakes in the shape!
To make it fun and to help him understand how fossils are formed, we made salt dough and had him make some dinosaur fossils using his toy dinosaur figures.
He used different parts of his toy dinosaurs – feet, head, tails and some each whole – and stamped them into the salt dough to make fossils.
I then cut up a cardboard box and lined it with foil and poured some sand into it. We placed the fossils in there along with his dinosaur toys and a couple of dinosaur eggs.
He then drew his favorite dinosaur character from “Dinosaur Train”.
And we also looked up some information on different types of dinosaurs – herbivores and carnivores. It was his idea to look up on attach methods, defense methods. I think we may have learned more than he did 🙂 He wrote some of the points and we made a board for the presentation.
He had a great time working on this project, making fossils, learning some things about one of his favorite type of animal and also teaching us a thing or two. He was so happy to present all this at the science fair.
