Okra Curry
I love okra! And this is a fairly simple dish to make although you’ll see several ingredients listed, they are all common ones. And it is very tasty. It is something I came up with on the fly. I opened my spice cabinet and pulled out a bunch of spice boxes. My little one (5 year old) wanted to help. So I asked him to hand me the spices one by one and he told his dad later that he had made the dish 🙂
What you’ll need:
- Channa Dal – 2 handfuls (approx 4 tbsp)
- Ural Dal – 1 handful (approx 2 tbsp)
- Coriander Seeds – 1 handful (approx 2 tbsp)
- Methi Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Black Peppercorn – 1 tsp
- Cloves – 5 to 6
- Cinnamon stick – 2 inch piece
- Red Chilies – 2
- Sesame Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Onion Chopped – 1 large
- Tomato Paste – 1 to 1 1/2 tbsp
- Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Okra cleaned and cut into 1 inch pieces
- Oil to saute
Method:
1. Make sure that the okra is washed, wiped dry (no moisture), and then cut into 1 inch pieces.
2. In a pan, warm about 1 tbsp oil and saute all the spices listed above, upto sesame seeds, until they turn golden brown and start spluttering.
3. Add the onion and saute till it turns translucent. Switch off heat.
4. Grind the sauteed mixture along with tomato paste, turmeric and salt, to a smooth paste.
5. Add another tbsp of oil to the pan and saute the okra till soft.
6. Now add the masala paste to the okra and give it a stir. Switch off heat. Enjoy! Goes well with roti or rice.
