Cabbage Palya (Spicy)
This is a very typical Karnataka style of making Cabbage Palya by adding Palyada Pudi (a type of masala powder, also used with other vegetables and in vangi bhaath). It tastes spicy and makes a very good accompaniment to Roti or even Dosa. And yummy when mixed with rice. Its very simple to make.
What you’ll need:
- Cabbage (finely chopped) – 1 medium
- Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
- Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
- Urad Dal – 2 tsp
- Turmeric Powder – 1 tsp
- Salt to taste
- Palyada Pudi (or Vangibhaat Powder) – 2 to 3 tbsp or to taste
- Cilantro (chopped)
- Fresh Grated Coconut (Optional, I did not add) – 1/2 cup
Note: I got my Palyada Pudi made in India and brought over. You can also use a good Vangibhaat Powder. I’ll post a recipe of it when I get around to making some.
Method:
1. In a large pot, add 1-2 tbsp of oil and add the Mustard Seeds, Cumin Seeds and Urad Dal. Let the seeds splutter.
2. Now add the chopped Cabbage. Mix.
3. Add the Turmeric Powder and Salt. Mix and cover the pot. Let cook on medium-low for about 8-10 minutes, until the cabbage is almost cooked.
4. Add Palyada Pudi. Mix and cook for another 4-5 minutes.
5. Add the Cilantro. Mix.
Serve hot with Roti or Dosa. Or Mix with Rice and top with ghee. Enjoy!
